Creation or Gospel First?

Tweet Share

I’m getting ready for tomorrow’s second class meeting in Theology II here at Southern Seminary, and here’s what I’d like my students to be thinking about the night before.

You meet a completely secular (inasmuch as that’s possible, of course) man in your community. He grew up with atheist parents, and has never really known anything about Christianity. As you talk with him about Jesus, where are you going to try to start?

Now I know a lot of that will be determined by the kinds of questions he asks, and the way the conversation goes. But, still, if it’s up to you, do you start with the gospel? With creation? With his sin and need for redemption?

Do you start with John 3:16, Romans 3:23, or Gen 1:1?

What do you think?

Only when we see how lost we are, we can find our way again. Only when we bury what’s dead can we experience life again. Only when we lose our religion can we be amazed by grace again.
