Here in Louisville, the Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice held their annual celebration of Roe v. Wade at the Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church. The venue was a town hall forum on the “Plan B” abortifacient, referred to these days as “emergency contraception.” The town hall drew all of 35 people who, according to the Courier-Journal, “crammed into a small church meeting room adorned with a grainy painting of the Lord’s Supper.”
But don’t let the small turnout fool you. According to Joan Beal, “chairperson” of the Coalition, many religious people don’t want to admit publicly that they are supportive of legal abortion. “There’s really a lot more people in these churches who are pro-choice,” she said.
There was no mention of whether a nursery was provided at the Methodist church for this event. And John Wesley was unavailable for comment.
